Frequently Asked Questions

Where do my original videos go after I compress them?
When you confirm that you want to delete an original video to free up storage space, it is moved to the system's native "Recently Deleted" folder inside Apple's Photos app. They remain there for 30 days, allowing you to easily recover them if you deleted them by mistake. To reclaim the storage space immediately, you can open the Apple Photos app, go to Albums → Recently Deleted, and select "Delete All".
Can I review a video's quality before discarding the original?
Yes! CompressGuy provides an interactive side-by-side A/B comparison screen. Simply tap on a video card, and you can hold down the comparison thumbnail to instantly flip between the original and the compressed version. We strongly recommend doing this to ensure you are fully satisfied with the quality before discarding your original file.
Why does the reported storage size exceed my iPhone's capacity?
If you have iCloud Photos enabled with "Optimize iPhone Storage" turned on, your device offloads the physical video data to iCloud, keeping only tiny local placeholders. CompressGuy indexes both your local and iCloud-offloaded video libraries. The reported total represents the combined size of all your videos if they were fully downloaded, which can easily exceed your physical mobile capacity.
Does the app upload my videos to any servers?
No. CompressGuy operates 100% on-device. All video library scanning, metadata clustering (city, location), and parallel HEVC compression are performed directly on your iPhone's hardware. Your personal files and coordinates never leave your device.
What if my video compression is taking too long?
CompressGuy uses advanced iOS parallel encoding to compress videos as fast as possible. However, compressing large files (like long 4K videos or files offloaded to iCloud that need to download first) requires significant hardware processing. Ensure your device is sufficiently charged and has a stable network connection if downloading from iCloud.
